Joel Cabrita | Mapping Apartheid in South Africa Through the Regina Twala Archive
450 Jane Stanford Way, Building 160, Stanford, CA 94305

Abstract: This seminar discusses my ongoing work with the Regina Twala Archive. Twala was a pioneering South African intellectual and political activist, and I will talk about how her archive uncovers new perspectives on everyday life, intellectual networks, and political thought in twentieth-century South Africa. I will also highlight the innovative research of undergraduate Geoffrey Franc, who used the archive to develop a compelling project on racial segregation and the politics of green spaces in apartheid-era Johannesburg. Together, these projects demonstrate how archival research at Stanford can generate fresh insights into urban inequality, environment, and race under apartheid in South Africa.
Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. for in-person attendees. Register to join online.
