Professor Joel Cabrita Launches the "Regina Gelana Twala Digital Archive"
Professor Joel Cabrita launches the "Regina Gelana Twala Digital Archive". This online collection, a product of her "Visible Bodies" project at CESTA, provides unprecedented access to Twala’s personal documents, photographs, and correspondence, shedding light on the life and work of one of Southern Africa’s significant, yet historically overlooked, intellectuals and activists. Twala's groundbreaking contributions to social work, anthropology, and political activism are now available to researchers and
the public, offering a valuable resource for those interested in African history, gender studies, and the liberation movements of Southern Africa. This archive aims to restore the recognition Twala deserves for her remarkable achievements, allowing her legacy to reach a wider audience. As Professor Cabrita writes, "with the support of her family, this archive provides users access to Twala’s collection of photographs, personal documents, and correspondence, with the intention of granting her name and her remarkable achievements the recognition they deserve."
The online exhibit is hosted by Stanford University Libraries with Wits Historical Papers as a collaborative partner (the hard copy materials are kept in the guardianship of Wits Historical Papers). Congratulations, Professor Cabrita, on this publication!
