Caroline Winterer specializes in American history before 1900, especially the history of ideas, political thought, material culture, and the history of science. She is a collaborator in Stanford’s Humanities + Design research lab, which has developed tools like Palladio, Breve, and Data Pen, and in Mapping the Republic of Letters, a project that uses sophisticated visualization tools to trace networks of communications among intellectuals throughout history. Her most recent book project, Time in Maps: From the Age of Discovery to Our Digital Era (Chicago, 2020), traces the spatial depiction of time in maps over the past 500 years.
