William Robertson Coe Professor of History and American Studies

Caroline Winterer specializes in American history before 1900, especially the history of ideas, political thought, material culture, and the history of science. She is a collaborator in Stanford’s Humanities + Design research lab, which has developed tools like Palladio, Breve, and Data Pen, and in Mapping the Republic of Letters, a project that uses sophisticated visualization tools to trace networks of communications among intellectuals throughout history. Her most recent book project, Time in Maps: From the Age of Discovery to Our Digital Era (Chicago, 2020), traces the spatial depiction of time in maps over the past 500 years.
