Gordon Chang’s research interests in history include the connection between race and ethnicity in America, as well as the diplomatic, cultural, and social dimensions of trans-Pacific relations. As co-director of the Chinese Railroad Workers of North America project, he employs both traditional format books and a major digital archive to tell the stories of the Chinese workers who built America’s Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s. His recent publications on the topic include Ghosts of Gold Mountain (2019) and The Chinese and the Iron Road (2019).
