Nora Barakat’s work focuses on people, commodities, and landscapes in the interior regions between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. At CESTA, she applies digital historical exploration to texts produced in the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, and Iran as the Project Lead of Open Gulf: Historical Texts as Data. The transdisciplinary, multi-institutional Open Gulf research group publishes open historical datasets, corpora, and digital exhibitions in service of open research and pedagogy in the field of Gulf Studies.
