Dissertation Title
A Late Ancient Biography of Bones
My research looks at how bones were used in ceremonies and rituals of the ancient world. Sources describe how people looked to the bones of celebrated religious heroes for divine miracles, to animal bones to disclose one’s fortune, or even to the bones of enemies for use as musical instruments. For this project, I’ll be using digital methods to identify the range of meanings given to bones and map trends among where bone-centered practices were taking place.
