Richard Roberts takes a social-historical approach in his use of court documents to study the French conquest of the interior of West Africa and its impact on African societies and economies. He is Project Lead of the Senegalese Slave Liberations Project, which builds on the model of the Slave Voyages Database to make information about individual liberation cases from 19th century West Africa widely available to students and researchers.
